FRIDAY NIGHT IS BLUES NIGHT

FRIDAY NIGHT IS BLUES NIGHT
The Legendary Night Owls monthly Friday residency got off to a promising start on 24th July. The Owls original line-up of Howard Goy (drums), Andy Dalton (bass guitar), Jon Newby (guitar) and Ken Mayle (harmonica) took us back to the roots of blues for two hours of great music. Sadly, owing to a prior booking, Dave Tomlinson (keyboards) was not available, though he hopes to be back for future sessions, along with various guest players too, to make even more Friday nights to remember. So, if you have never heard the Legendary Night Owls, come along to their next session on the 28th August, starting at 20.30.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
Fifty happy members and guests left the Jazz Club on Saturday after witnessing a breath-taking up-tempo selection of tunes, courtesy of Brian Boles - who was on top form - and Andrew Hall, making a welcome return to the Club after many months. Andrew’s driving style of piano playing makes him a much sought-after musician in New Orleans, where he has spent many months recently.

With Andrew on piano, Frank Baker took over the trombone and also playing the ‘rattly gourd thing’ (doubtless, someone will be quick to tell me the name of the instrument!). It all made for an entertaining evening and was a taste of things to come, as Andrew is bringing his own band to the Club on 22 August as part of his ‘Memories of New Orleans’ UK tour. This is a ticketed evening as demand will be high (£6 members, £8 guests), and following Saturday, there has been a rush of sales. However, there are a few tickets left, so email to reserve or buy online.

Next Saturday, the Queen Street Band features Roy Norton on trumpet, then the following Thursday (6 August) The Easy Riders are back, with Pete Jones leading the band, and special guest Derek Grey on clarinet. Don’t forget on 15 August, the Easy Riders will be making one of their occasional, but very welcome Saturday visits to the Club, with special guest Tony Peatman on banjo. Not to be missed!

TWO HUNDRED MEMBERS?
In the autumn of 2013, we gave our 100th new member a bottle of wine (I think). We are expecting member number 200 to sign up in the next few weeks (all the more reason to reserve tickets for special guests well in advance). Our 200th member will receive not only a bottle of wine, but their £10 joining fee will be waived. So if you know any friends or neighbours who have been thinking about joining the Jazz Club, get them to sign up ASAP!
