The bijou audience last night were in for a treat – Howard Johnson’s rousing 1920s song Ice Cream, often played at the club by Brian Boles when Howard Goy is on drums, was given an airing, this time by Peter Surfleet and guest drummer Lennie Dale, whose crashing solo gave the tune a new twist, with the members roaring their approval at the end.
There were some great New Orleans numbers played by a lively Queen Street Band that also had Tony Peatman guesting. After some weeks of adjusting his clarinet, Fred announced that he needed to replace his reed and having done so, his playing was transformed; his solos, and those of the other musicians coming through loud and clear. More nights like that please!
Last night I, along with ‘er indoors’, family and friend (I only have one) were sitting at the back in the one and nines, working hard to keep the bar profits buoyant, and testing the skills of our relief bar staff – thank you John and Nicky for helping out!
Coming up! New Orleans Heat will be at the Club on 18 April. Tickets sold out some time ago and we have a growing waiting list, so if you haven’t paid for your tickets yet, please do so asap – either at the Club or online.
Looking ahead a bit, tickets for the International Delta Six are selling well and once again, there is certain to be a waiting list and touts lurking in the shadows outside the Club! If you want to be assured of tickets, please let me know.
Before all that, we have the pleasure of Brian Boles leading the Queen Street Band next Saturday, then, reminding us that we are a month older than we were a month ago, the Easy Riders make a welcome return on Thursday 5 March. See you there!
