President

HONORARY PRESIDENT: BRIAN CARRICK

PATRON: BARBARA DICKSON OBE

This just in from Club Secretary Geoff Mullett

After a few lean Saturdays audience-wise, a good crowd defied the rain last Saturday to see Brian Boles lead the Queen Street Band and to hear his latest jokes (and a couple of his old ones!). What I enjoy about Brian’s jokes is the way he weaves them into an anecdote, leading one to believe the event actually happened, with only the punch line giving the audience the realisation that it was all fiction.

Thus it was, when the band struck up the 1936 jazz standard Caravan. This was written by Juan Tizol, trombonist with the Duke Ellington orchestra. The number proceeded at an increasingly fast pace, causing Brian to comment at the end that the caravan must have been travelling at 50 mph. This was neatly followed by a story of a car towing a caravan – well, you had to be there to appreciate the punch line. Anyway, I digress! Coming up:

This Thursday sees the return of the Easy Riders. If you've not seen them yet, well, you should.

Sat. 7th. March
Peter Surfleet leads the Queen Street Band

Sat. 14th. Brian Boles
leads the Queen Street Band

Sat. 21st. Possibly Graham Litchfield. I’ve been waiting for confirmation – I’m told that Graham has been very hard to contact over the past weeks.

Friday 20th: This is  NOT a trad jazz night.
Local band Robots Found Errors have drawn comparisons with Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Mercury Rev and Tame Impala. They have pleased many festival audiences and have supported The Former Members (ex-Country Joe and the Fish, Blues Project and Steve Miller Band). They are supported by a couple of other groups and the whole thing kicks off at 8pm, running through until 11pm. Tickets are available on the web site or from ‘Off The Beaten Track’, Aswell Street, Louth. http://www.robotsfounderrors.com/

There are still a few tickets left for the International Delta Six, playing 6 June, and Brian Carrick’s Algiers Stompers are also selling fast. I continue to get requests for New Orleans Heat tickets and the waiting list grows, so if you have tickets that you can’t use, they will go to a good home!

That’s it! See you Thursday.

Geoff
